California Jury Returns 18 Million Dollar Punitive Damages Verdict Against Union Carbide

In the second phase of a mesothelioma trial a California jury decided the conduct of Union Carbide in selling asbestos used in joint compound was so ergrigious that punitve damages should be imposed. Despite what most people believe punitve damages are rarely awarded in civil suits. The purpose of punitve damages is not to compensate but to punish a defendant for terrible conduct and to deter such conduct in the future.
